Little Boats to Your Isles

Little Boats to Your Isles

Tonight the stars are blue and cold.
Wind turns like a forgotten song.
I write the saddest lines I know
on the edge where you belong.
I love you because I love you —
no reason, no why, no end.
You are moon and burning branch,
ash that flames when I breathe your name.
My little boats still sail to your isles.
Salt and pine ride the evening air.
Your body blooms like spring’s wild tree.
I swing from fire to frost and back,
blindly, endlessly, to thee.
I love you because I love you —
no reason, no why, no end.
You are moon and burning branch,
ash that flames when I breathe your name.
My little boats still sail to your isles.
If little by little you forget me,
I’ll forget you wave by wave.
No anger, only quiet sea.
I love you because I love you…
My little boats still sail…
toward your isles.
