THE LOVE WE DENY

The Love We Deny

Don’t whisper "I love you,"

I won’t admit I care,

I’ll erase the nights we tangled,

The moments we laid bare.

We’ll live in shadows of denial,

For as long as we can bear,

Because this love slipped in uninvited,

And now we’re caught in its snare.

We must turn our backs, we must turn away.

I’ll silence my song, you’ll seal your lips,

We’ll bury the sweetness, the tender slips.

We’ll cling to the present, forget what was,

For this love isn’t love, it’s a hollow buzz.

Anything so still can’t pulse with life,

We must turn our backs, we must turn away.

But oh, those quiet hours, so tender, so brief,

It’s the ache of wanting that brings me grief.

You can’t force love to stay or to flee,

Sometimes, you must set it free.

For when love isn’t love, yet it won’t depart,

You must be the one to break your own heart.

So in the dark, when loneliness creeps,

I’ll pretend your name isn’t etched in my sleep.

And when I sit, hollow, with nothing to hold,

I’ll imagine you’re distant, your story untold.

I’ll tell myself this longing will fade,

That sorrow will lift, that I’ve already strayed,

That I’ve walked away.

But oh, those quiet hours, so tender, so brief,

It’s the ache of wanting that brings me grief.

You can’t force love to stay or to flee,

Sometimes, you must set it free.

For when love isn’t love, yet it won’t depart,

You must be the one to break your own heart.

When love isn’t love, but it clings like a vine,

You must be the one to draw the line.
