THE ECHO OF UNSPOKEN

The Echo of Unspoken Words

I.

It can’t be real—tell me it’s a lie,

A fleeting whisper, not a vow.

Tears don’t suit you, not this way,

What have I done to break you now?

I’ve never let my walls come down,

But you saw through, you saw it all.

I’m bare, exposed, and trembling here,

Caught in a truth I can’t recall.

II.

Could you take it back?

Pretend it was a fleeting jest,

A laugh to lift the heavy air.

Let nothing shift, let nothing change,

You never meant those words to rest

Upon my heart, a weight too much to bear.

I love you—

But I don’t want to.

III.

Awake again, another sleepless flight,

Red-eye skies where stars refuse to shine.

I wish we’d never learned to soar,

To chase horizons we can’t define.

Perhaps we’ll weave a gentle lie,

A tale to mend what’s come undone,

I never meant to make you cry,

To let love spill where it’s begun.

IV.

Could you take it back?

Pretend it was a fleeting jest,

A laugh to lift the heavy air.

Let nothing shift, let nothing change,

You never meant those words to rest

Upon my heart, a weight too much to bear.

I love you—

But I don’t want to.

V.

Your smile, a fragile gift you gave,

Even as your spirit frayed.

We crumble as the daylight fades,

Entwined in Central Park’s soft shade.

There’s nothing left to do or say,

No path to flee, no way to part—

I’m trapped within the love I made,

A captive of my own wild heart.

VI.

I don’t want to—

But I do.
