NO TRUST IN DUST

No Trust in the Dust

I shouldn’t be out here,

Steering through this wasteland alone,

Mind jagged as the cracked asphalt.

The tires scream, worn to bone,

And the radiator spits its last breath.

This desert sun wants to soften you,

Melt you into something I can shape,

Pliable, unresisting.

But I can’t find the switch

To kill this furnace inside me,

And there’s no road back from here.

I’ll carve courage into your frame,

Make you bolder than your blood allows.

I’ll shade your gaze

A deeper, untamed blue,

And watch you tumble,

Caught in my undertow.

I claimed you with a conqueror’s grip,

That moment by the motel’s flickering light

Burns endless in my skull,

Until the memory frays,

Seeping into my veins,
