CLUTCHING DUSK

Clutching the Dusk

I never meant to be the one to break your light,

Thought I’d be the first to fade into the dust.

I couldn’t learn to linger in your glow,

Blind to all but my own scars’ sting.

The summer night hums in my veins,

Its words a blade that split the air.

I didn’t want to admit you saw the truth,

Like leaves falling, I felt the shift too.

Your eyes held a storm I couldn’t name,

Their shadows whispering what words won’t say.

Does anyone know how to cradle my heart,

To keep it from slipping through the dusk?

Hold it fast, I beg, don’t let it fall—

I’m not ready to release this fragile spark.

Before the stars swallow the last of day,

I need to show you how to guard my pulse,

To keep you close, tethered to my bones,

Lest I lose you to the night’s cold pull.

I’m no liar, I won’t weave false threads,

But you’ve dodged the truth’s sharp edge too.

I see the end flicker in your gaze,

A silent tide pulling you from shore.

My cries echo in this hollowed dusk,

Is anyone there to hear my breaking voice?

That night we spoke, the air was thick with moths,

Their wings a frantic dance around the flame.

I wanted to hold you, to halt the fade,

But my hands were too heavy, too late.

The season’s turn carved a rift between,

And I’m left chasing echoes of your warmth.

The fields beyond are bruised with twilight’s weight,

Each blade of grass a witness to our fall.

I’d give my breath to rewind the hours,

To mend the seam where love began to fray.

Does anyone know how to anchor my heart,

To stop its drift before the dark descends?

I’ve walked these paths where moonlight pools,

Searching for signs in the earth’s quiet script.

Your absence is a frost that burns my skin,

A wound I trace with trembling hands.

Hold it fast, I plead, don’t let it shatter—

I’m not ready to let you slip away.

The sky bleeds out, a canvas torn to gray,

And still I stand, calling to your shadow.

Before the world goes dark, I’ll bare my truth,

Show you how to clutch this fleeting beat.

Does anyone hear my heart’s frail song,
